Do you have a really stupid question?

Yeah, me too. Lots of them. Use the "comments" link below to post your question, and when I get a bunch of them I'll see about forwarding them to the powers that be to get them answered. This way, Dr. Kolars et al. won't know that most of them are my really lame questions. And if you know an answer to a question, please let us know!

Andy, here is a good start:

1. Are our rotations at St. Mary's? I forgot what they said at orientation. This is the hospital we toured, right?

2. Are there any apartments within walking distance to the hospital (whichever one we end up rotating through)?

3. Does Sprint get good cell phone reception in the hospital? (Sprint has a reputation for spotty service - I know from experience).

Thanks!

A few more:
4. Can we get ACLS'ed at Mayo before orientation? Can non-University of Minnesota students use the ACLS class offered in Minneapolis? Do we have to pay for ACLS?

5. When do we get a -mayo.edu email address? When do we get access to the Mayo intranet stuff?

6. What does our book/educational stipend look like? Do they give us any books (Mayo Board Review)?

7. Does this mean I have to wear a suit (or the female equivalent? Maybe a current resident can offer some suggestions and advice.

8. What are the details about the shuttle to the Twin Cities/Mall of America?

Jelena, Andy,
Most of our rotations are at St Mary's. There is free shuttle between St Mary's and mayo clinic.

Shuttle service to Minneapolis is by Rochester Direct. It costs about $50 for round trip. http://www.rochesterdirect.com/

Yes, you'll be wearing a suit daily, unless on call or post call. I don't know about orientation though.

I like the other questions and would like to know their answers too. :)

I'm glad someone started this...I have some weird ones...
1. I heard somewhere that people only wear dark colored suits. Is that true? Can I wear a khaki suit? Anyone? Anyone?
2.When does our health insurance start? I am hoping we get some info on that one soon!
3. I know someone asked about computer stuff, so maybe this is a repeat, but is there wireless? Could a PDA access the computer records?
THANKS!!!

Do we get any "presents" when we get there, such as a copy of Harrisons or a PDA?

I talked with the nice folks in the medicine office this morning (507-266-1256). Here are their answers to some question:

- health insurance starts on June 18th

- In the fall we will all get the Med Study book, and we'll also get the Mayo Board Review book at some point, and there is no book stipend

- they do not provide PDAs, or PDA software

- there is wireless access on campus for non-patient info - web and email mostly

- we will be getting our email and system logon information during our orientation, probably on the 19th and 20th

- the ACLS folks are being swamped with calls and want you to take ACLS at home if possible. It's unclear to me who pays for it at Mayo and at our home institutions, but I should be getting an email today with some more info

- the employee leisure and lifestyle office has discounts on many things, including movie tickets and cell phones. The currently have Mayo discounts on Midwest Wireless, Sprint, T-mobile, and Cingular. The thought in the office is that Midwest Wireless has the best coverage, but this was just a personal opinion. The leisure and lifestyle office number is 507-284-4480.

To add just a bit more:

1) Dark suits (black and navy) are the traditional colors and what you'll see most often. But there's certainly nothing wrong with khaki. =) Men's clothing requirements are a bit more strict (suit or sportscoat) than women.

2) Regarding wireless - devices need to be LEAP compatible (this is an encryption technique for non-nerds). Some PDAs can access internet, but it's a hassle to get it set up. There is NOT a way to get patient records on PDAs.

3) Regarding PDAs - I would wait and see what people are using here (I've gotten away without one in medical school since there are computer workstations and COWs (computers on wheels) all over).

I got an email from the University of Minnesota people in Minnesota. They unfortunately can't allow non-UofM people to take their ACLS class.

Here's some answers to earlier questions...

Rotations are predominantly at St Mary's Hospital (SMH).

Regarding apartments within walking distance of SMH - it's probably easier to look for homes to rent than apartments. I don't know of any good ones (and I live in that neighborhood right now).

We have a Sprint cell phone and reception is OK as long as you're not in elevators.

I believe that the may.edu e-mail is assigned during orientation. Access to Mayo intranet is available at all internal stations and through a VPN program. I believe that we get access when they set up the electronic accounts during orientation. The VPN is easy to use but unfortunately you can't get UpToDate on home computers...

Not sure on a stipend itself, but we do get board review books for certain rotations and as part of the curriculum.

Suits! I came here owning 1 suit and that had to change quickly. There's a Men's Warehouse in town, but they're expensive. As sad as it sounds, sometimes the thrift store in town will have amazing suits - basically some of the staff ("consultants" in Mayo speak) must give them up. This is very hit-or-miss and may weird some people out, but I've bought a nice sportcoat there for $2.00. In any case, start shopping for professional attire now! Suits are just the norm and unless we're told not to, I would wear one unless it's a social event...

I would defer to Niti's post regarding Rochester Direct. Often times there will be groups that head up to the cities and people carpool...

Looking forward to meeting everyone!
Jeff
